Cenotaph – Perverse Dehumanized Dysfunctions

Is “impossibly brutal death metal” a genre? If it hasn’t been so far, it is now. Turkey’s Cenotaph have been around since 1994 with no apparent breaks in their output, and have elected to honor the world with the 6th full-length right about now. Perverse Dehumanized Dysfunctions is a thick slab of unbelievably heavy, violent and brutal – brutal death metal. It is indeed a joy to hear that whatever happens in the deep and terrible hells of -core and uselessness, there are always the hosts of Purebred Genre Heaven ready to advance the cause of no-bullshitism.

A reference list could, for obvious reasons, go on for ever. Cryptopsy, Visceral Disgorge, Abominal Putridity and of course Devourment are obvious picks, but the brutal sky is the brutal limit here. The clanging snare feels like a wink to goregrind, and there are also a slew of guitar refinements – in particular the heavy use of squealies and pinch harmonics – that reek not of putrefaction, but of tech-death. Blast beats are the order of the day, but there is no dearth of tempo shifts and bass- and drum breaks to keep things slamming in all possible directions.

The vocals are spectacular – deep, guttural and full of disgust. Roaring almost constantly as the snare sounds off under the pile of down-tuned distortion and the unbelievably hyper active bass lines, they constitute the cherry on top. Boring asshats may call this generic, but there is plenty of funky, jazzy melodeathcore or whatever for them in this world. Cenotaph play for people who get death metal. Impossibly brutal death metal.

As usual these days, there is a dizzying array of labels involved with this release, and this time all three of them are veritable ancient temples of extreme death metal. CD and digital download versions are available from the band’s Bandcamp page, as well as from Turkish Hammer Müzik. A Russian release will be handled by Coyote Records, and the American edition will be published by Sevared records. It’s an impressive line-up of labels, and if it won’t convince you that Perverse Dehumanized Dysfunctions is the way to go, nothing will.
